Day 12/13 Goodbye Morocco - Hello Spain

 Day 12/13 Marrakesh - Madrid

4am and it’s time to wake up, breakfast at 430 and on the road at 5am. We’ll be driving all day, not getting to Marrakesh until 530 tonight.

Back over the Small Atlas mountains which are 500 million years old and known for their minerals and fossils. Then through the High Atlas Mountains, youngsters at 65 million years old making their money out of snow and skiing.

We drive through the Tinghir valley and the city of Tinghir, the Dades valley and the Rose valley, producing rose oil as well as blooms.

Ouazzette is the Hollywood of Morocco where Tom Cruise filmed Mission Impossible. It’s a city of 1000 casbah (fortresses).

A spice demo provides more medical solutions than cooking uses and the owner is more than prepared to poke his sinus demo spray up anyone and everyone’s nose who even hints that they might have a sinus problem.

One of our party wants to buy a Berber carpet so we get an extra, unexpected  stop. Many of the carpets hand woven, one thread tied at a time.

Lunch is in the high Atlas Mountains then over the pass at 2260m and we zigzag down the other side.

A long day and we’re finally back in Marrakesh. There’s time to wander the markets, some friendly bargaining and then a final rooftop dinner overlooking the old town.

Monday and it’s time to farewell Morocco. An 8am shuttle to the airport, goodbye to Blythe and Iain and our young Australians from London. Our 1pm flight is delayed, tyre trouble, then it’s a short, comfortable flight to Madrid. A quick check-in at our hotel and we’re just in time for our 7pm tour group meeting for the next leg of our adventure.

Welcome to Spain.
